TASK:

For this exam, you are expected to take the knowledge you have learned over the topics of Hypothesis Testing, One-Way Designs and Inferential Statistics, to design a simple one-way experiment. Your experiment can be on any topic you wish it to be on, but it must conform to ethical standards, have a hypothesis, an independent and dependent variable and an analysis plan. This task is broken down into 5 specific sections which will each cover a different aspect of experimental design considerations.

Section 1

Hypothesis Testing State the hypothesis and null hypothesis for your one-way experiment. Ensure that your hypothesis is an ethical, directional, causal prediction that confirms to the parameters of one-way experiments. In addition, describe the hypothesis testing process as outlined in the slides, but put it into your words, referring to the terminology in your research hypothesis. Note: A direct copy and paste of the flow-chart from the PowerPoint File will NOT result in a grade for this answer. I expect you to use that flow-chart as a guide, but to write the steps out in your own words, utilizing your research hypothesis, to demonstrate understanding of the concepts involved.

Section 2

Measurement State the Independent Variable (with levels) and Dependent Variable for your experiment. Also state whether your experiment is Between-subjects or Within-subjects and provide a justification for your decision.

Section 3

Procedure Describe the procedure for your experiment – i.e. a step-by-step description of the tasks participants will engage in to produce data for you to analyze. For example, if this were a descriptive research study you would describe in this section how your participants will be provided with a survey, whether they would complete the survey alone or in groups and whether they could access the survey online or in person.

Section 4

Inferential Statistics/Analysis Plan Describe how you will analyze your data – specifically, what inferential statistical analysis will you employ?

Section 5

Statistical Conclusion Validity Finally, run through the scenarios of being able to reject the null hypothesis or failing to reject the null hypothesis, and describe what the correct decisions are in those instances as well as what the Type I AND a Type II errors would look like in your research, using the terminology from your hypothesis and null hypothesis. To use a non-experimental example for a Type I Error: if I were conducting research on outside temperature and ice cream sales I might incorrectly conclude that when it’s hot outside more ice creams are sold. However, in reality the data show that ice cream sales don’t change when outside air temperatures increase or decrease.
